Insulation performance is measured to determine how effectively a window keeps heat in a home. Better insulation in windows means lower energy costs, and just as important: improved comfort on cold winter days. Insulation performance is measured in U-values. The U-value is a measure of heat loss through a window; therefore a lower U-value means better insulation performance. In the past, double pane clear windows had U-value of around .48.     The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has developed a Sound Transmission Class or STC rating , in which a single number is used for describing the sound isolation performance of a material. The higher the STC the better the system is at isolating airborne noise. A STC rating of 45 means that the element reduces the sound passing through it by 45 dB.
